Adopting a pet in the UAE

Welcome to pet parenthood! 🐾💞 Now the hard truths...

The UAE has so many fantastic animal rescue organisations with a vast array of cats and dogs looking for forever homes. But what should you consider as an expat looking to adopt a pet?

  1. Is the breed you are looking at banned in your home country or your next expat posting? Do your research.
  2. Are you looking at a snub nose breed? SNUB NOSE BREEDS ARE EXPENSIVE AND COMPLICATED TO TRANSPORT. Don't say you weren't warned! Think very seriously and work out the logistics and costs for when the time comes to travel.
  3. The larger the pet generally the more expensive the travel. For destination countries where arrival is as cargo only this is especially true
  4. Are you looking at a more exotic animal, perhaps a bird? Make sure that there is appropriate CITES paperwork in place otherwise travel will be almost impossible.

Destinations vary when is comes to cost of travel so it's important that you do your research and start to put aside money for when you do choose to relocate. Australians in Dubai often get a nasty surprise when it's time to go home, blood tests and quarantine make travel an expensive exercise.

We are here to help! Our estimates are no-obligation and can be used to start a nest egg for when it's time for you to move. We will also give you a pet travel checklist so you know what to keep up-to-date to allow for a smoother journey.
